The Monotheists are those who worship God alone and no one else.
They are those upon the religion of Noah, Abraham and Moses and there is only one religion that fits this description.
They are those who submit to God alone upon monotheism, turning away from polytheism and its people.
In Arabic the word for this is “Islam”, it is the religion of all the prophets and the messengers and it is the only monotheistic religion.
Who Are The Monotheists
Then verily, the monotheists are those who single out God alone in all worship.
They are those who believe in one god only, and He is The True God, The Creator, The Sustainer, The Owner of all things; The Only One deserving of all the various types and forms of worship.
They believe this in their heart, on their tongues and on their limbs.
Thus, they do not believe that there is anything or anyone that has any of God’s Names or Attributes, unlike those who call a prophet The Lord or believing that there is anyone as forgiving as God or as Merciful as Him.
And they do not believe that there is anything that acts outside of His Creation and Control and that everything is merely His creation that He uses however He Wills, and His Decree is Just.
And the manifestation of the above on the limbs, the sign of true faith, is that they do not worship anything else along with God.
God is The Only Creator, Owner and Disposer of Affairs, so He is The Only One deserving of all the various types and forms of worship.
These are the monotheists.
The History of Monotheism
Monotheism is the original religion of mankind.
It is the religion upon which God created the first man, Adam and the way upon which He has created every human including you.
Upright, inclined towards the truth, having love for the truth and anticipating justice.
Having belief in The One Creator who created them and created everything else.
This is natural and it is the innate disposition of humans.
However, there are people in the world, who do not want people to be sound.
They do not want people to have healthy hearts and minds and instead wish them to do things that are harmful to them, in order that they may achieve some short-lived benefit by misguiding the people.
These people beautify for mankind false things, either false ideas or false desires.
They encourage the people on that which is most harmful to them (polytheism – the worship of anyone else alongside God) hoping to receive some benefit by way of it, but in reality, they only harm themselves but they do not perceive it.
The Call of The Prophets and Messengers
God did not leave us to ourselves.
He did not leave us to just be misguided by these types of people without giving us a path to take to Him.
After the Prophet Adam, there were ten generations of Monotheists.
They worshipped God alone and nothing else.
However, over time, the people of knowledge passed away and the people were fooled into committing polytheism, worshipping that which cannot help or harm them and is merely a slave of God like them.
God then sent to mankind the first messenger to call them back to monotheism.
Noah was a monotheist upon the monotheistic religion.
He called his people to the original religion, the religion of Adam and the religion of all the prophets and messengers.
He called his people to submit to God alone, singling Him out in worship, turning away from polytheism and its people.
However, none responded to his call except a few.
After calling them for what was a huge length of time God caused Noah to realise that the people would not respond to the call to worship God alone, and rather would stay steadfast upon idol worship.
God has said in The Qur’an,
“Noah said, “My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children give him no increase except loss.
And they have plotted a mighty plot.
And they have said: ’You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth, no Ya’uq, nor Nasr (the names of their idols).
“And already they have misled many. And (O God), Grant no increase to the wrongdoers except in error.”
Because of their sins they were drowned, then were made to enter the fire, and they found none to help them besides God.
And Noah said, “My Lord, leave not one of the disbelievers upon the earth!
Indeed, if you leave them, they will mislead Your slaves, and they will beget none except wicked disbelievers.”
“My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer, and all the believing men and women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction!””The Noble Qur’an 71:21-28
After time had passed since Noah and those with him had descended from the ship, and his descendants had spread throughout the Earth, God sent Abraham.
There was a time when Abraham was the only monotheist on Earth.
He was born to a polytheist people who worshipped the created things like the stars and statues.
God has related to us his story,
“And indeed We bestowed aforetime on Abraham (Abraham) his (portion of) guidance, and We were of him Well-Knowing.
When he said to his father and his people: ‘What are these images, to which you are devoted?’
They said: ‘We found our fathers worshipping them.’
He said: ‘Indeed you and your fathers have been in manifest error.’
They said: ‘Have you brought us the truth, or are you one of those who play about?’
He said, ‘Nay (Rather), your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth Who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify.
‘And by God, I shall plot a plan (to destroy) your idols after you have gone away and turned your backs.’
So he broke them to pieces, except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it.
They said: ‘Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be one of the wrong-doers.’
They said, ‘We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham.’
They said: ‘Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify.’
They said: ‘Are you the one who has done this to our gods, O Abraham?’
He said, ‘Rather, this – the largest of them – did it, so ask them, if they should speak.’
So they turned to themselves and said: ‘Verily, you are the wrongdoers.’
Then they reversed themselves, [saying], ‘You have already known that these do not speak!’
He said, ‘Then do you worship instead of God that which does not benefit you at all or harm you?
‘Uff to you and to what you worship instead of God. Then will you not use reason?’”The Noble Qur’an 21:51-67
Abraham, the father of all the prophets after him, continued his call to God after this affair and despite his people trying to kill him – and even his own father remaining upon polytheism.
His story and the stories of the trials the prophets went through in their sincere call to God, The Most High would fill many books so we offer only brief reminders here.
During the life of Abraham, he and his son Ishmael built the house for God’s worship in Makkah, Arabia, the dwelling place of Ishmael, the father of the Arabs.
During Abraham’s life he made the following supplications to his Lord, which God has related to us in His Final Book:
And (remember) when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this city a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in God and the Last Day.” He (God) answered: “As for him who disbelieves, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the torment of the Fire, and worst indeed is that destination!”
And (remember) when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House, (saying), “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”
“Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our rites, and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.
“Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own, who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book and The Wisdom, and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.”
And who turns away from the religion of Abraham except him who befools himself? Truly, We chose him in this world and verily, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. The Noble Qur’an 2:126-130
And God’s answers to these supplications are as clear as day to the one who reflects:
After Abraham and his son had built the Kabah in Makkah, it was the place of pilgrimage for the monotheists after them, like Moses and his nation.
However, some time after Abraham, the people of Makkah began to practice idol worship and turned away from the monotheistic way of their father Abraham.
The people to whom Moses had been sent had fallen into polytheism time and again after Moses passed away and the people to whom Jesus was sent likewise – even going as far as to worship him despite his teaching them to worship God alone and noone else!
This was the state of the Earth, until God sent His final messenger.
God gave Muhammad the noblest lineage.
He was from the descendants of Abraham, from the noblest of the Arabic Tribes and from the most noble of marriages.
He became an orphan while still young and spent time in the care of his Grandfather and Uncle.
He grew up in Makkah and was known for his trustworthiness, never lying and abstaining from the polytheistic practices of the majority of the people.
Then, when he reached 40 years old, God sent him as a messenger to call mankind back to the religion of truth, the religion of his father Abraham – submission to God alone.
God sent to Muhammad His Final Book, The Qur’an, which like the books before it, is The Speech of God.
He spent ten years in Makkah, calling his people to worship God alone with no partners.
For ten years this was the only obligation God had placed upon his people and still the people of Makkah opposed him and even tried to kill him!
God later commanded the Messenger, may God extol Him in the highest company of the angels and grant him peace, to migrate to the city of Madeenah north of Makkah.
There, many of the people accepted his call and followed him.
What remained of God’s laws were prescribed after the migration and through it God completed the religion for His slaves, teaching them everything helpful to them and warning them from everything harmful, in this life and the next.
After many years of animosity and attacking those who had submitted to God alone (in Arabic: “Muslims”), God allowed the Prophet to take rulership of his home city Makkah, without any fighting.
He destroyed the idols the people had been worshipping and forgave his people, despite their trying to kill him and killing many of his companions – just for worshipping The Creator alone!
The people submitted to God (entered into Islam) in droves, and the religion of submission to God spread to the East and the West, until places as far as Morrocco and Indonesia answered the call to God.
The polytheistic empires of Rome and Persia were no more and in their places were the lands of those submitted to God.
This is the monotheistic religion.
Who Are The Monotheists?
The monotheists are those who have submitted to God alone in worship and obedience and no one else.
They are the prophets and messengers and whoever follows them correctly.
The word for these people in Arabic is “Muslim”.
I ask God to expand your chest to the truth, to make you from them and to make you enter the home He has prepared for those who single Him out in all worship.
May He extol His Messenger in the highest company of the angels and bestow on him peace, his family and companions all together.
